VPN.ht is one of the Hong Kong based VPN providers released in 2014 by Wicked Technology Limited. At the time of their launching, VPN.ht partnered with the Popcorn Time BitTorrent platform but their partnership didn’t last long and it discontinued some time ago.
Like any other VPN provider, in our VPN.ht review also we found the same claims that their software offers complete anonymity on the Internet, which is even illustrated using some of the guides. Let’s take a look at it to know whether VPN.ht stays true to its words or not.

Speed & Performance – How Fast Is VPN.ht?
VPNs slow down the speed. But how much is the main question. Some VPNs slow down the internet speed at such a level that browsing the Internet for regular activities become next to impossible and some slow down the speed at such a small extent that the users won’t even be able to notice it.
In our VPN.ht review, we carried out some speed tests using different servers from the USA and Europe. And we would rate it as manageable, which can let VPN.ht come in the pro column.
|The United States||123ms||28.73 Mbps||12.33 Mbps|
|Europe||39ms||88.93 Mbps||43.84 Mbps|
Though EU speed was well accepted and it was within the range like any other good VPN, the US server was a little slower compared to the EU server.
Where Are VPN.ht Servers Located?
Moreover, with such a small number of servers, we thought that there might be some dysfunctional servers. But we’re glad to say that it didn’t turn out in that way. VPN.ht was working smoothly and it was very much alive.
How Is the Customer Support Service of VPN.ht?
We’re happy to say that, while doing VPN.ht review, we thought that the response time might be slow or our query altogether won’t be solved, as there’s no chat support. But the opposite happened. We contacted their support team by generating a ticket and within a day, we got a reply.
Their support ticket option is entirely hidden in the knowledgebase page. So, it’s something the users must pay attention to or else they might miss it. But once you click through it and select the department you want to contact, it will get easier. Moreover, they also provide an FAQ section and knowledgebase articles. However, there are not many FAQ’s answered or articles provided and it needs some work.
What Are the Pros of VPN.ht?
- Offers fast download and upload speed
- Allows P2P/torrenting on most of their servers
- Netflix works with almost all servers
- 256-bit AES strong encryption standard along with 128-bit AES, 64-bit Blowfish for OpenVPN, PPTP, L2TP protocols
- Does not log any activity of the user
- Customer support service is quick, responsive and friendly
- Smooth installation process
What Are the Cons of VPN.ht?
- Does not offer a kill switch
- IP/DNS leaks detected
- A limited number of supported devices
- Belongs to Hong Kong Jurisdiction
- Only three simultaneous connections from one single account
Though it provides many features, for example, no-logging policy, torrent/P2P friendly, and Netflix on almost all its servers, it does have certain drawbacks that must not be ignored.
Firstly, it does not offer kill switch protection, which is provided like a primary feature. More to add, it couldn’t pass the VirusTotal scan and showed that it has an adware virus attached, and it even cannot pass the IP leaks. These are some of the issues that must not be ignored at any cost. Lastly, it comes under the jurisdiction of Hong Kong, which follows the laws of China and it’s questionable for the VPN business. All we can say is that there are much better VPN providers you can look into. We may not recommend VPN.ht unless is works on the IP leaks and adware virus issue.
Let’s Compare VPN.ht v/s:
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is VPN.ht Good for Torrenting?
Many VPN providers turn away when it comes to torrenting or they will give it a second thought before putting this feature into action. Luckily, in our VPN.ht review, we found that it has no problem with torrenting.
So, yes, VPN.ht is torrent friendly, which supports torrenting on most of their servers. Though, like other top torrent friendly VPNs, it is adviced to stay away from those servers in countries that are not torrent friendly.
Is VPN.ht Tested for IP Leaks?
In our VPN.ht review, we were concerned about this and unfortunately, we got bad results. We tested VPN.ht through different means and the results were not pleasant.
Tested On: browserleaks.com (It Passed), perfect-privacy.com (It Failed), Google Chrome Extension Leak Test (It Passed), ipleak.net (It Failed).
From four different tests, two passed and two failed. Moreover, we also ran VPN.ht’s install file through a Virustotal scan and we found one adware, which worries us.
Based on these VPN.ht results, we can say that it not only exposes the physical location of the user but there’s a possibility that the adware we found may also collect data from every site visited by the user.

Does VPN.ht Keep Log Files?
If you have prior experience of using a VPN, then you might be aware that many VPNs keep logs. So it is vital to check the logging policy, as many times it so happens that your ISP might not have an idea about your online activity, but your VPN provider might have a track of your activity. Digging into VPN.ht’s logging policy, we’re happy to find that they’re not logging any user information.
They stay true to their words:
“You value your privacy. So do we. We don’t keep logs, we don’t know the sites you have visited or the applications you’ve used.”
“We are committed to your privacy and do not collect or log traffic data or browsing activity from individual users connected to our VPN.

We will use your contact details to send you notifications about the Service and to respond to customer support requests. You may access and change your personal information by logging in to the Site.”
Hong Kong Jurisdiction - Free from 14 Eyes Alliance
If you look from outside, you’ll think that VPN.ht is based in Hong Kong, which is free from 14 Eyes Alliance. So, it’s good news, which is true because none of the alliances can do anything with VPN.ht to get information. But, there’s one issue. Hong Kong still has to follow the rules and regulations of China.
Though VPN itself is not illegal in China, VPN providers need the government’s approval before doing the VPN business and often they demand backdoor access. And due to this, the whole point of using a VPN becomes a question, and unfortunately, VPN.ht can be a victim of the government in this way.

Yes, VPN.ht works with Netflix and more to add, it’s one of the few VPNs whose every server unblocks Netflix. Does VPN.ht provide a Kill Switch?
Unfortunately, Kill Switch functionality is not provided by VPN.ht, which can prove as a drawback because there won’t be any protection or the session won’t stay hidden once the internet connection drops.

Protocols and encryption used by the VPN are one of the crucial points, which must not be overlooked. Weak encryption can become dangerous if any hacker cracks into it and gains access to the user’s data.
Luckily, VPN.ht is one of the safest VPNs. It uses the robust OpenVPN protocol, which is one of the strongest VPN protocols. Also, VPN.ht is open sourced, which means it is maintained by the whole online security world. Also, it supports L2TP/IPSec and PPTP along with the parameters AES 128-bit and 256-bit for data, RSA-2048 for keys and SHA1 (160-bit) for HMAC.
